A free weekly running/walking program will make its Australian debut on the Gold Coast next month.
Mayor Ron Clarke will launch Australia’s first parkrun at 7am on Saturday 2 April at Hollindale Park, Main Beach.
Parkrun is a not-for-profit organisation that offers a free, weekly electronically timed five kilometre run (or walk), catering for all ages and fitness levels. Established in England in 2004, the first Parkrun attracted just 13 runners but since then 55,000 “Parkrunners” in the UK and Denmark have completed more than 350,000 runs to date.

Cr Clarke said
parkrun, sponsored by Council’s Active & Healthy program, was designed to encourage the community to participate in fitness activities and meet other runners at the same time.
“The beauty of this event is that it’s free and open to all ages. You can run, walk, push a pram or even take your dog and it’s a great way to meet others and get out and enjoy one of our wonderful parks,” he said.
“The timing of parkrun’s debut is also perfect for anyone wanting to get into shape for any of the Gold Coast Marathon events in July.”
The Main Beach parkrun will be offered every Saturday at 7am from 2 April.
