Top tips for students and staff to get active everyday

Making physical activity a priority and integrating it within the whole school community is the most effective strategy. However, there are a number of quick and easy ways to help people be more active everyday.

  • Encourage lunchtime sports by making use of existing facilities and providing equipment and supervision.

  • Start a sports team of staff members.

  • For mini breaks between double periods or before class begins, do some stretching or yoga moves with students.

  • Reward students who have walked or cycled to school by allowing them to leave 2 minutes earlier than the rest of the class.

  • Offer relaxing lunchtime yoga or pilates classes (for staff & students), especially around exam time.

  • Add a table tennis area or putting green for staff use.

  • Have an activity competition with another class eg. handball tournament, running race or basketball-a-thon.

  • Get students with detention to conduct an ‘emu parade’ (grounds duty) around the school grounds.

  • Feature photos of staff and students being active in the school newsletter.

  • Get your class juggling – make your own balls with balloons and birdseed and have a practice session before each class.
