Early Childhood | Games/Activities

Research shows that physical activity has many benefits for children including healthy growth and development of the cardio-respiratory system as well as bones and muscles. Mental and social health benefits of physical activity include children feeling more confident, happy, relaxed and sleeping better.

Physical activity behaviour patterns are established early in life, so engagement in physical activity now will help children to be more active in the future. Some children need little or no encouragment to participate in active play, whereas others need some form of parent or educator support.

Adults can help encourage and support their children to be physically active by:
  • Walking or riding with their children to early childhood centres/school (Active Transport).
  • Being good role models by modelling physically active behaviour
  • Promoting all forms of physical activity in the centre/home environment through posters, brochures etc.
  • Ensuring everyone understands the importance of being active
  • Supporting childrens choices
  • Thinking of active alternatives when you hear ’I’m bored’  (Snacktivities)
  • Limiting activities such as watching television, videos and computer games.

Some children are not naturally as active as other children. You can always try motivating children to participate in activities by:

  • Providing the right activity  (Search by age)
  • Vary the length of activity for short attention spans
  • Make it FUN by joining in the activity.
  • Encourage children
  • Play together
  • Role model behaviours
  • Rotate kids toys
  • Praise the children for playing
  • Mix up both group and individual play time

Things to consider:

  • Provide adequate shade area
  • Ensure hat, sunscreen and correct clothing is worn (SunSmart Policy Guidelines)
  • Make active and healthy choices in the centre the easy choice
  • Implement an active play policy in your centre (Go For Your Life)
