Most children find it fun to play and be active. Encouraging physical activity in early childhood is important for healthy growth and development. Other great reasons for children being active include:
  • Physical activity provides opportunities to make friends and learn physical and social skills.
  • The establishment of healthy habits - children under the age of five who are very active are more likely to stay active throughout childhood.
  • Regular physical activity during early childhood can influence health, both now and in the future.

The guidelines recognise the role physical activity plays to support healthy growth and development. The physical activity recommendations tackle active play in addition to sedentary behaviour and screen time.

"It is possible to make every day an adventure!"

The new National Quality Standard addresses both nutrition and physical activity under the second quality area: Children's Health and Safety.
