Recommendations suggest children should take part in 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity everyday. With the majority of a child's day being spent at school, schools and after hours school are settings which play an important role in shaping a child's attitudes and activity behaviours.
It is widely recognised that physical activity is:
  • essential for good health and wellbeing,
  • enhances students' educational outcomes,
  • supports their personal development and
  • promotes lifelong active lifestyles.
Schools can use a number of approaches to support and encourage physical activity for students and their local community. The resources and local school profiles may identify some new ideas and approaches.

Healthy Queensland Awards
The Healthy Queensland Awards are an annual state-wide competition to find Queensland's healthiest community, Queensland's healthiest school and Queensland's healthiest workplace. Winners share in a prize pool ($500,000 for schools) with prize money will going towards "healthy" infrastructure such as: walking and cycling paths; basketball court; shade structures; sport and recreation equipment; policies that make healthy choices the easy choices and programs that promote health and wellbeing.
2010 applications will be opening soon with the closing date 26/03/2010.
Green and Healthy Awards
These awards encourage and assists Green & Healthy Schools to maintain and improve their environmental and personal wellbeing of the school community. Registration is free and open to all Queensland Schools.
