Top tips to get active
- Swim or surf. Head to your local pool or beach. Play beach volleyball. Kick the footy.
- Ride, scoot, skate or blade! Explore places you have never been like when you were a kid. Try out the local bike paths, skate parks and bmx tracks.
- See what free or cheap activities are on near you. Check out the calendar, the community directory and Gold Coast City Council’s Active and Healthy GC program has on offer.
- Put your favourite music on and dance like no-one is watching.
- Walk and talk. Instead of sitting down and talking at lunch time, try walking around the grounds while chatting.
- Try something new! There are heaps of physical activities to try. Start kite surfing, join a club or grab some friends and head down to your local park or football field for a game of ultimate disc.
- Check out these traditional indigenous games.
- Walk, ride, run or use public transport to get to the shops or movies instead of driving or getting lifts. Get off the bus or train one stop earlier and walk.
- Move around while talking on the phone.
- Schedule a regular activity with your friends (eg. Wednesdays are tennis nights)
- Try to limit time spent watching TV, videos or DVDs, surfing the net or playing computer games, especially during the day and on weekends. Research has shown that watching TV for more than two hours a day when you are young is associated with being overweight, having poor fitness, smoking and raised cholesterol in adulthood. So Get Up, Get Out & Get Active!
- Have a mini-competition with friends. Pick your favourite sport or game (eg. 3-on-3 basketball, soccer, elastics, dancing) and run the tournament over a few weeks.
- Check out your local community centre or Police Citizen Youth Club (PCYC). They have fun programs for youth, cheap sports and facilities such as pool tables, table tennis or football, as well as being a place just to hang out. Contact your nearest PCYC for information.
- Healthy eating goes hand in hand with getting active so make sure you are eating right. Also try to get enough sleep.
Spend more time doing the active things you enjoy and already do.
